Is the Coronavirus transmittable through food products?

As the novel coronavirus continues to be studied, new findings are being made. The virus depends  on a variety of factors, including temperature, humidity, and surface conditions. It is also known that the virus can remain infectious for up to 3 hours in an aerosol, up to 4 hours on copper surfaces, up to 24 hours on cardboard and up to 2-3 days on smooth stainless steel surfaces.

Although the BfR states that there have been no COVID-19 infections due to food consumption, foods can still become contaminated due to poor manufacturing processes. It is therefore important to uphold hygiene rules such as regular hand washing, such as the BfR hygiene rules for food preparation. The two main known sources of food contamination remain droplets released from coughing/sneezing, or transmission through smear infections resulting from unhygienic processes. For this reason, hygiene measures are being taken, such as the use of a barrier to separate the food workers from the product.

To avoid rapid spread of the virus, we would also like to draw your attention once again to the WHO hygiene recommendations:

  • Wash your hands regularly, with warm water and soap, for at least 20 seconds
  • Maintain social distancing (at least 1.5m), and do not shake hands or hug other people
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Sneeze in the crook of your arm, or into a tissue.
  • Stay informed and listen to your healthcare provider
