Sugars forbidden in baby teas – what does it mean?

Legal regulations for foods ensure that a safe product reaches the market. Products intended for infants and toddlers are held to stricter standards, as infants and toddlers are to be protected. A recent meeting among the German Federal Council outlined this, and resulted in a new regulations forbidding sugar, honey, fruit juice/concentrate/powder/nectar, malt, or other plant-based syrups from being used in teas intended for infant consumption.


The ban is the result of studies proving that sugar is extremely harmful to infants.


This is partially because life-long eating habits are established in the first three years of life. If an infant consumes excessive amounts of sugar, it increases the risk for tooth caries or fatness/obesity.

Although many infant tea manufacturers already produce a product free from sugars and sweeteners, it was never written in law until now. In the future, it can be expected that further unbalanced infant foods will be banned too.


The new regulations seek to protect infants and toddlers from consuming excess sugars. To achieve this, the regulation also offers the following protective measures:

  • An indication to the consumer that no sugar and sweeteners may be added to the food during preparation or administration.
  • The minimum age at which the product may be consumed must be mentioned on the label. Similar to the minimum age for the introduction of complementary foods, this is at least 4 months.


Substances such as pesticide residues are far more harmful to babies than to adults, and therefore come with strict Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs). This is because infants are born with incomplete immune systems, meaning increased exposure to harmful substances may lead to medical emergencies. Regulations also enforce specifications for the nutrient and vitamin contents of baby food.
