QSI – Quality Services International GmbH is the competent partner in the analysis of hemp products and cannabis in food

The use of cannabis products (from the branch of cannabinoids) is becoming increasingly popular. Already now, hemp seeds, hemp protein powder and other processed hemp products are available on the market. Because of the different varieties of hemp, some of which with significant amounts of anesthetics, it is crucial to know the exact content of these substances. The analytical testing requires special approval by the Federal Office, as the reference standard is an anesthetic. QSI has been issued this authorization and offers the analysis of hemp products.

The main regulated ingredient of hemp is Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (“THC”, “dronabinol”) including its acid. These should only be present in the foodstuffs by the use of useful hemp, so that any psychotropic effects can be excluded from consumption. A recommendation has been published in the European Official Gazette (02.12.2016), according to which the official monitoring of all EU countries is to be actively monitored in food from hemp for potential THC content. While there are various recommendations for the legal assessment of hemp (see below), there are currently no legally regulated (limited) values.

In our experience these recommendations are often exceeded. This is reflected in the accumulated rapid alerts in the European rapid alert system for food and feed (e.g. 7x warning of hemp products in hemp protein powder, hemp protein supplements and hemp seed in September 2016 alone).

The analysis at QSI is carried out by GC-MS after extraction of the sample and is carried out according to official collection of examination procedures (§64 LFGB L 47.00-9, December 2004). The use of a special isotope-tagged standard ensures accurate analysis in the trace area. The sum of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol and Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinolic acid is recorded.

In addition to this analysis, we recommend further analyzes, such as the detection of mycotoxins or plant toxins (tropan, ergot, pyrrolizidine alkaloids) in order to ensure the transportability of products.
